TELL ME MORE

Mountain Pepperberry is a surprise gem of the bush that can be used in any and all savory dishes in place of black pepper or to give that extra bite. Historically, it was used by indigenous Australians to enhance flavours and to treat oral infections like sore gums and tooth aches. Today, it’s prized for its unique flavor PLUS its exceptional health benefits.

The pepper berry is known for its ‘hot’ flavour due to the polygodial properties. They are fruity upon first taste, followed by a spicy flavour.

Mountain Pepper Berry has exceptional antioxidant capacity (more than the beloved blueberry!). It also contains Vitamin E, lutein, zinc, magnesium and calcium.

Provenance

Mountain pepper leaf and mountain pepperberry (also known as Tasmannia lanceolata or Tasmanian Pepperberry) grow naturally in the forest and the cool climate of southern New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania.

This small tree grows up to five metres in height and only the female trees bear fruit. The fruit is berry-like and starts off dark red in colour and turns black on ripening.

Traditionally, mountain pepper was used for its antiseptic properties and its flavour. Both the leaves and fruit were used. Indigenous Australians suffering from sore gums and toothaches often crushed the berries with water to make a paste, which was then applied to the mouth to treat the infection. It was also added to food as a flavour enhancer.

Health Benefits

Mountain pepperberry is rich in antioxidants which help protect cells against the damaging effects of free radicals and may prevent or delay cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer’s, as well as autoimmune and cardiovascular diseases.

Pepperberries have significantly higher antioxidant capacity than blueberries, which are considered one of the richest sources of antioxidants among fruits.

Mountain pepperberries contain high concentrations of Vitamin E, folate, zinc, calcium, magnesium, iron and lutein, a compound that plays an important role in eye health and wellbeing.

Mountain pepperberries are a rich source of protein and are high in dietary fibre.

Mountain pepperberries are used to assist in the slow absorption of glucose from the stomach, allowing for stabilization of blood sugar levels.

The berries contain the compound polygodial, which can be used as an anti-inflammatory for issues such as arthritis, asthma and assisting in healing gut irritability.

The polygodial properties protect the stomach lining from pathogens, diseases and inflammatory markers.
Mountain pepperberries were traditionally used for their antiseptic properties, and to treat sore gums and toothaches.

Taste & Smell

Flavour:
Mountain Pepper Berries are characterised by their polygodial content, which is responsible for their strong peppery taste. Eaten fresh, the flavour is sweet, fruity and pungent, with an intense peppery bite, that builds and lingers on the back palate. When cooked for longer periods of time, as in slow-braised dishes and sauces, the flavour becomes sweeter and less spicy.

Palate:
Initially earthy, sweet and fruity on the front palate with a intense spicy, peppery notes that build and linger on the back palate.

Aroma:
Aroma of bush scrub with fragrant fruity, menthol characteristics and delayed but intense peppery notes.

Food Uses

The mountain pepper plant is used both ornamentally and in food preparation, and the tree produces two products: the berry and the leaf. The berries are dark-blue to black in colour and have a sweet, aromatic peppery taste. The leaves, stems and berries produce approximately three times the antioxidants of blueberries.

Eaten fresh, the immediate taste is one of sweet, earthy notes with an intense peppery bite that lingers on the tongue and back palate, leaving an almost mineral-like aftertaste that continues to build in heat. Native mountain pepperberries are typically hotter than conventional black pepper, but more versatile, and complement both sweet and savoury dishes.

The berries can be used fresh, dried or milled as a spice. The intensity of the peppery heat decreases the longer it cooks, which slowly releases the sweetness of the berries and adds a richer flavour. Add a little just before serving to experience the fullness of the spice’s peppery punch.

Pepperberries pair well with dairy (yoghurt, most cheese varieties, cream, ice cream and gelato/sorbet), oil and vinegar-based meat marinades and salad dressings, meat-based sauces and egg-based condiments. Complements fish, seafood, chicken, pork, lamb, beef and game meat, and pairs perfectly with all vegetable varieties.

Mountain pepperberries lift the profile of alcoholic beverages such as gin, vodka, white rum, Cointreau and tequila. It adds a dark pinkish tint and refreshing, spicy twist to soda, tonic, mineral water and lemonade.

Love them!!

These pepper berries are super peppery. They came in beautifully sealed packaging. We only use half amount of normal pepper and that is enough.

I love Pepper Berries

Love pepper berries … first discovered in Tasmania, given a free sample with spirit of Tasmanian ferry crossing, March 2021. I find it fresher less bitter and a smoother stronger pepper than normal peppercorns.

I like the semi dried consistency, which works well in my grinder thankfully, great on avos and fresh tomatoes but gives a different flavour all my food where traditionally I have used pepper. Pity it is in such short supply and goes out of stock, with suppliers also limiting orders. Perhaps more plants should be planted.

Delivery times could be faster and better please, I found this in covid and pre covid times, customers want their orders within 5 working days and this should be achievable in australia!

Slow delivery

I have had lots of gushing emails from you but no goods yet. It has been almost three weeks. Despite this, you have asked for a review. So here it is. I also never asked for a public name.

Never going back to normal pepper

Nothing else like this in the world. Flavour is phenomenal. The dried mostly imported pepper is heat and no flavour. Australian pepperberries are in a class of their own.

Brilliant product

I recently used this product in association with the Saltbush and Lemon Myrtle for a roast lunch for 50 Seniors. Everyone remarked on how much they enjoyed the flavours and the kitchen was very aromatic. Great product!
