Raise the Bar Academy for Indigenous Education

18/01/2019

On January 16th, we were excited and honoured to be part of the Raise the Bar Academy in association with Coles, University of Melbourne and Athletics Australia. Raise the Bar is “an exciting residential camp program specifically for Australian Indigenous secondary school students in years 10, 11 and 12, who aspire to participate in athletics and study at university.”

This six day camp is in its fifth year, and seeks to encourage indigenous students to pursue their goals and dreams in post-secondary education and in athletics endeavours. 33 students are offered the opportunity for this all-expenses paid experience and the students are housed at the University of Melbourne. Each day attendees participate in sporting activities, with the goal to help increase their knowledge and skills in athletics, while working alongside internationally recognized professional athletes and para-athletes.

The program also focuses on encouraging participants to complete secondary schooling, and then educates on the opportunities that exist in pursuing post-secondary education and the various paths to do so.

Finally, students participate in a series of talks and presentations. As part of this, our founder Hayley spoke about the importance of preserving and educating on indigenous communities and native ingredients and how they play an important role in the history of Australia and in shaping the Australian culture now and in the days to come.

The Australian Superfood Co shared samples of their ingredients, which students tasted and used to create their own homemade BBQ sauce. With cooking, education, and some good food to eat, it was a fun day for everyone, and part of an incredibly important program that The Australian Superfood Co is pleased to support.
